Celaya candidate murdered; asked for security

Celaya.— Morena's candidate for the municipal presidency of Celaya, Gisela Gaytán Gutiérrez, was murdered yesterday afternoon at a campaign event in the community of San Miguel Octopan.

Hours before the shooting, Gisela Gaytán reported at a press conference that she had requested protection from the Electoral Institute of the State of Guanajuato (IEEG) and the National Electoral Institute (INE) through the state legal office of Morena.

“Assistance has already been requested through the state legal system in the party… That is the means that must be followed, not me as a candidate, no, but the party [Morena] requested it from the INE and the IEEG. Let's see if they have an answer about that today. But yes, it was requested,” she said.

The candidate opened her campaign yesterday morning in the Morelos Market, in Celaya, where elements of the Municipal Police arrived to provide security.

“Yes, of course, there is already security and what better security than the citizens, but, furthermore, it is available today. [I want to] thank you, the Secretariat of Citizen Security was taking care of us right now in the market... they were already taking care of us and yes, of course we do have [security]. There they [police] arrived and thank you for taking care of us,” he said at the press conference.

Gisela Gaytán presented her form and highlighted her work program, in which she placed security as a priority to restore peace in the municipality of Celaya, which is currently governed by the PAN, and end corruption.

She is the first candidate murdered in this process; Previously, 26 applicants were killed.

Shocked by crime

Alma Alcaraz Hernández, candidate for state governor for Morena-PT-PVEM, announced the murder of Gisela Gaytán from a stand where the campaign start of Carlos García was taking place, who is seeking to be re-elected as mayor of Silao.

“It makes me angry, I feel short of breath and I am shocked to have to give you terrible news: a few minutes ago they just murdered our candidate from Celaya for Morena, Gisela Gaytán.

“This is something that has us angry, shocked, in mourning. We are going to suspend campaign activities and it is demonstrated, unfortunately, in our own blood, in the blood of Morena people, once again, that we have a failed State and that this state needs to have a change," he said, adding that no " “Those who have blood on their hands can continue in office.”

Libya Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, candidate for governor for the PAN-PRI-PRD alliance, joined the condemnations for this homicide.

“I send my condolences to family, friends and colleagues. “I ask for the prompt response of the authorities to clarify this fact that hurts us deeply,” she published on social networks.

MC's candidate for governor, Yulma Rocha, expressed her condolences. “[It is a] tragedy that, together with the incidents of violence that our MC colleagues in Cortázar experienced yesterday, are a reflection of the insecurity and violence that Guanajuato residents experience daily and that today unfortunately disrupts the electoral process.”

For his part, Governor Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo expressed his condolences in a message spread on social networks and stated that the crime “will not go unpunished. “I firmly condemn this inhuman act and reiterate my full commitment so that the state coordinates the efforts of all levels of government in the electoral processes and thus those who participate in them have the necessary protection,” he expressed.

At night, the state Attorney General's Office issued a statement reporting that criminal investigation agents and forensic experts were collecting evidence at the scene “that leads to identifying, locating and capturing those responsible.”

Murder, for control of territory

David Sucedo Torres, a security consultant, pointed out that Gisela Gaytán Gutiérrez had already been threatened by the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, which controls the area where she was murdered; However, he clarified that there are still not enough elements to point to said criminal organization.

He explained that the little that can be seen in the videos of the event is that the candidate lacked a security diamond, since no response shots are seen or heard.

“There are no detained people; There are no injured people [aggressors], that is, it seems that the candidate lacked a diamond of security, something incomprehensible in the case of Celaya,” Saucedo explained.
