A driver, apparently intoxicated, crashed his truck into the bodies of three people in the town of Amalfi (Northeast). One of the injured died as a result of his injuries. The aggressor fled and hours later presented himself to the traffic authorities.
"It was 12:49 a.m. on December 31. Right on the corner of Palacio de las Carnes, the driver of a Toyota Hilux van crashed three people who were passing by the place. When we arrived to attend to the emergency, the driver had left the place and was presumably intoxicated," Corporal Julián Escobar Mafla, from the Amalfi Fire Department, told EL COLOMBIANO.
Security cameras in the sector were able to record the moment in which the driver drove head-on into three passersby, crushing them against a facade. After the impact, it was recorded that the driver continued driving and even ran over one of the victims.
"Upon arrival, we found that the victims of the accident were the mother and her 19-year-old daughter. Also a gentleman who was passing by the scene. The mother suffered minor injuries such as scratches, the young girl had one of her legs completely destroyed and we found several fractures in the man," added Escobar Mafla.
The injured were taken to the municipal hospital. The doctors determined that, due to the seriousness of the injuries, the 51-year-old man should be transferred to a more complex hospital. However, as confirmed by the fire department, he died while being taken by ambulance to Medellín.
The police organized an operation to try to find the whereabouts of the apparent drunk. Initially they found the truck abandoned and, hours later, the person responsible for the accident presented himself to the traffic authorities.
From the Traffic and Transportation Police indicated that, during the New Year's holiday bridge, 433,806 vehicles are expected to be mobilized on the roads of Antioquia.
"A call is made to the different users of the road network to adopt safe behaviors and drive responsibly. Avoid drinking alcohol before driving and respect speed limits", said Colonel Juan Carlos Guerrero Chávez, Sectional Chief of Transit and Transportation of Antioquia.
