Breaking news. Knife attacker kills teacher, seriously wounds two other people in France school attack

The incident took place in a school in Arras, a town in northeast France near Lille. France's interior minister says the attacker has been arrested by police.

One person has been killed and two others seriously injured in a knife attack at a school in the town of Arras. 

Local police say a man armed with a knife killed a teacher and left two other people wounded in a high school in the town of almost 41,000 people on Friday morning. That attacker has since been arrested. 

The incident took place at the Gambetta high school, which is located in the town centre, and police say the attacker shouted "Allah Akbar" - God is great in Arabic.

No high school student was injured, but a security guard and a teacher were gravely wounded after suffering several stab wounds. 

Students and staff were locked in the building as a security precaution. 

"A police operation took place this morning in Arras at the Gambetta school campus. The perpetrator was arrested” local officials wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 

The Elysée Palace says Presdent Emmanuel Macron and the country's education minister will travel to the scene of the stabbing.

A man of Chechen origin who was under surveillance by the French security services over suspected radicalization stabbed a teacher to death at his former high school and critically wounded two other people in northern France on Friday, authorities said.

The attack was being investigated as potential terrorism amid soaring global tensions over the war between Israel and Hamas. It also happened almost three years after another teacher, Samuel Paty, was beheaded by a radicalised Chechen near a Paris area school.

French anti-terror prosecutors were leading the investigation into the stabbings at the Gambetta-Carnot school, which enrolls students ages 11-18 and is located in the city of Arras, some 115 miles (185 kilometers) north of Paris.

A colleague and a fellow teacher identified the dead educator as D.B, a French language teacher at the school.

President Emmanuel Macron, who visited the school hours after the attack, said the victim “stepped in and probably saved many lives.” Macron also said that police thwarted an “attempted attack” in another French region after the teacher's fatal stabbing, but he did not provide details.

“Colleagues arrived quickly but unfortunately couldn't save the victim,” Hamzi said. He said the victim had his throat slit.

“I'm extremely shocked by what I saw," the officer said. "It was a horrible thing to see this poor man who was killed on the job by a lunatic.”

Police said two other men, a second teacher and a security guard, were in critical condition.
