Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) quoted the arrested driver as saying that the bus could not be stopped despite applying the brakes several times during the accident at the toll plaza on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. RAB said that the bus driver, Mohammad Nur Uddin (26), had not renewed his license and had told the police during the initial interrogation that he was drunk.
RAB-10 Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Tapas Karmakar, quoting the bus driver, said that the bus had been broken down for a long time. After repairs, it was put on the road that day. The bus driver realized from the beginning that there was a problem with the brakes. When the owner was informed about it, he asked him to drive slowly.
He also said that the driver claimed that the bus could not be stopped despite applying the brakes several times during the accident.
"The driver, Nur Uddin, admitted that he used to consume marijuana. However, he said that he was not intoxicated while driving the bus yesterday," said the RAB official.
Taposh Karmakar said he was arrested from Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, on Friday night.
Earlier, Gazipur Region Highway Police Superintendent Dr AKM Aktaruzzaman Basunia said that two people have been arrested and their identities are being verified.
He then said that after confirming the identity, the bus driver was arrested and his relative (Sister-in-law's husband) was released. However, the bus driver's assistant, Nahid (26), is still absconding.
Aktaruzzaman Basunia said that a case will be filed today regarding the accident, adding that this time a case will be filed not only against the bus driver but also against everyone else involved in the accident.
However, RAB officer Tapas Karmakar said, "We are not aware of the arrest of two people. We have arrested one person. The matter of handing him over to the Highway Police is under process."
Six people were killed when a Kuakata-bound Bepari Paribahan bus hit a private car, motorcycle and microbus that were stopped at the toll plaza on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway on Friday.
The bus was seized after the accident, but its staff escaped.
