JSO releases body cam perspective of officer-involved shooting with man wielding knife in San Marco

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released two video clips from the perspective of body cam footage taken during an officer-involved shooting incident in San Marco nearly three weeks ago.

The sheriff’s office received called on March 30 about a 49-year-old man who was seen stabbing himself near Bertha Street. News4JAX is not identifying the man because he has a documented history of mental illness.

The video picks up when officers Veale and Easterly find the man wielding the knife on Atlantic Boulevard and Belote Place. The first video shows Officer Veale getting out of the car to confront the man.

Both officers instruct the man to drop the knife, but instead, he raises it as he is coming toward the officers.

Veale fires his gun three times, and Easterly tasers the man. The man drops to the ground, moaning in agony.

The officers instruct him to roll on his stomach and show his hands so he can be handcuffed.

The case is under investigation. The man is identified as an ex-convict who served 12 years in prison for armed robbery, burglary and kidnapping. He also has three prior Baker Acts.

The Chief of Investigations for the sheriff’s office said both the use of a stun gun and the use of a firearm are within police department policy for that type of potentially deadly encounter.

He remains in critical condition and is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on police.
