Jember resident dies after being hit by a train at a crossing without barriers



JEMBER, KOMPAS.com – Andika (18), a resident of Gugut Village, Rambipuji District, Jember Regency, East Java, died after being hit by a train on Friday (29/3/2024). The victim died at the location and was dragged by the train for 300 meters. The accident started when Andika was riding with Rizki Cipta (20) on a motorbike. At that time, he passed a railway crossing without a gate in Rambigundam Village, Rambipuji District. Meanwhile, the Sritanjung train connecting Ketapang - Jember passes on the Direct Crossing Road (JPL) 132 Km 188+5 between Mangli - Rambipuji Station. At that time, the victim immediately crossed and was hit by a train. "There are motorized vehicles that will pass through the unguarded level crossing, the driver has sounded the locomotive's whistle many times," said Daop 9 Jember Legal and Public Relations Manager Cahyo Widiantoro via telephone.



Apart from that, residents around the location also reminded the driver. However, the victim still did not pay attention, so the accident was unavoidable. As a result, the motorbike rider died. Meanwhile, the man on the pillion survived because he jumped from the vehicle. "As a result of this incident, the Sritanjung train stopped to carry out a circuit inspection," he said.



After the locomotive and train facilities were declared safe, the Sritanjung train continued its journey to Lempuyangan. Meanwhile, motorbike riders were evacuated by local residents. KAI urges the public to be more careful when crossing train lines. Apart from endangering yourself, the incident also caused disruption to train travel. In accordance with Article 114 of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation, road users are obliged to give priority to trains and give priority rights to vehicles that cross the tracks first. "KAI invites the public to be more orderly when at level crossings, obey the signs available at the location," he concluded.
