Red Circle: Yigal Amir, assassin
Blue Arrow: Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli Prime Minister
This footage is known as the Kempler Video (similar to the Zapruder film of the JFK assassination), and was published by Channel 2 in Israel.
The Kempler video shows Yigal Amir lounging about or sitting on a cement planter situated at the bottom of the stairs that officials, participating in the rally in support of Yitzhak Rabin's policies, would pass by on their way back to their cars. The video then shows Rabin descending a stairway and walking towards his car. Amir can be seen reaching for his gun, circling behind the Prime Minister and extending his arm, followed by a flash and three shots. The last image is of Rabin disappearing under a pile of security men to screams of horrified onlookers, after which the photographer stopped filming and hit the ground
Context:
The Oslo Accords were agreements signed by Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization in 1993 & 1995, the first time the two sides had agreed to recognize each other, and committed them towards ending the war and transferring authority over the West Bank and Gaza Strip to a self-governing Palestinian state. It was a breakthrough in the decades-long conflict and both Yitzhak Rabin and his Palestinian counterpart, Yasser Arafat, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Israel and Palestine agree to be besties on the White House lawn
In Israel, right-wing protestors held rallies opposing the Israeli Prime Minister for accepting any Palestinian statehood, as they wished to keep the entire Holy Land territory based on religious beliefs. In July 1995, opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu led a mock funeral procession featuring a coffin and hangman's noose at an anti-Rabin rally where protesters chanted, "Death to Rabin".
In response, on 4 November 1995, a coalition of left-wing parties and peace groups organized a rally in support of the peace process in Tel Aviv. The rally attracted a crowd in excess of 100,000 people. In his remarks at the rally, Rabin declared, "I always believed that most of the people want peace and are ready to take a risk for it". As he left the stage, he was shot by Yigal Amir, a 25-year-old far-right law student at Bar-Ilan University, who wanted to stop the peace process. He believed that under Jewish law, Yitzhak Rabin was a threat to Jews and it was legal to kill him. There is some controversy over whether he had received permission from a right-wing Rabbi, but he had informed many people of his plans, including an informer for Shin Bet (Israel's internal security service, like the NSA), spawning various conspiracy theories.
Within months of Rabin's death, Benjamin Netanyahu would be elected Prime Minister, setting his country on a different path. This is widely seen as the most successful assassination in history, in terms of how the assassin's aims (in this case, to stop the peace process) were achieved.
