video circulating on social media shows a St. Charles Parish Sheriff's deputy shove and punch a woman in the face during a confrontation in Luling Monday night.
The clip has fueled accusations of excessive force online and from the family of the woman, identified by the Sheriff's Office as MaryLee Breon Robinson, 30.
"It's OK for you to come and do your job, but you don't have to be so aggressive and treat us like we're animals," Robinson's mother, Miranda Robinson, 50, said. "We're not animals."
The video surfaces at a time of intense scrutiny over the treatment of Black people by police across the United States. MaryLee Robinson is Black. Deputy Henry Sill is White.
Miranda Robinson said Sill was angered by her daughters' words, and she suspects the deputy's aggressive reaction was racially motivated.
"There's no hard or harsh feelings," she said. "I just want to see him held accountable for his actions and dealt with in the proper way."
Meanwhile, the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday released video of the encounter recorded by the deputy’s body-worn camera. The Sheriff's Office alleges MaryLee Robinson resisted arrest and refused orders from deputies to back away.
In the cell phone video, Sill is seen pushing MaryLee Robinson backwards into the side of a mobile home. She falls to the ground, and Sill grabs for her arms before he punches her twice in the face and attempts to handcuff her.
