McALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man has been hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting outside the McAllen police station, police said.
McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez held a news conference Monday, where he said the incident began at around 4:38 p.m.
According to Rodriguez, a Hispanic man was in front of the station, banging on the windows aggressively. Officers came out and spoke with him, in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
The man had two knives, one in each hand, Rodriguez said. Rodriguez said they attempted to talk him down, and offer him help. Police said the man refused to put his weapons down, and officers used less-than-lethal rounds.
Those attempts also failed, and the man then threw one of the knives at an officer, and charged another officer with the other knife, according to police.
At this point, one of the officers shot at the man, striking him two or three times. The officer that discharged his weapon was identified as Kyle Minister, a three and a half year veteran with the McAllen Police Department.
The suspect is in emergency care and will be facing criminal charges upon his release, police said. In a press release, the man was identified as 31-year-old Bryan Colunga of McAllen.
